Network

Míla's telecommunications system is robust and diverse, based mainly on two systems: trunk network and access network. We also provide our customers access to the company's technical premises throughout the country.

Míla's system is like a telecommunications highway for voice, data transport, and media broadcasts. Míla sells its products and services to companies with a telecommunications license.

Access Network

Míla's Access Network builds mostly on fibre-optic and copper lines but also on microwave connections. Nearly all companies and households in Iceland are connected to Míla's Access Network.

Míla's Access network is powerful and versatile and is based on fibre optics and copper lines. The copper system is the most widespread since almost all households, companies and institutions in the country are connected to the system. Míla's VDSL solution is available to every home in urban areas of the country. Míla's VDSL solution provides high-speed connections to homes where fibre-optic cables are connected to the street cabinet and from there, existing pipes are used for households, whether it is copper or fibre-optic. Míla provides fibre-optic cables in new, developing neighborhoods.

Since 2017 Míla has connected homes in the capital area, Selfoss and Reykjanesbær to a fibre-optic network that provides up to 1 Gb/s internet speed. Míla aims to connect every home to fibre-optic in the years to come.

In 2023 Míla introduced the new platform 10x that provides up to 10 gigabyte-per-second internet connections to households and companies in Iceland.

Trunk Network

Trunk network

Míla's Trunk Network is built mostly on fibre-optic cables but also includes copper lines and microwave connections. The network includes all urban cores in Iceland.

Míla's services throughout Iceland are plentiful and reliable. Míla's main fiber network is 1800 km, the total optical fibre in the trunk network is in excess of 4000 km. Míla also operates an extensive microwave trunk network. The fibre-optic cable system is the main support layer for the whole telecommunications system in Iceland. The structure of the fibre-optic cable system is based on ring structures and thus designed to maximize the operating time for any given connection.

Besides optical fibre, Míla's core network offers a variety of wholesale leased lines, both fixed and wireless solutions. All leased lines are private, bidirectional and fully symmetric. Available bandwidth for our leased lines ranges from 64Kb up to 100Gb. Interfaces available are E-interfaces, STM-interfaces, Ethernet interfaces and Fibre-Channel (FC). Other types of interfaces are available up on request. Our core network transport technology is based on the OSI model layer 0 to 2,5 , so no IP-routing is involved in creating and transporting leased lines in Míla's core network.

Facilities

Ennishöfði

Mila operates over 500 technical facilities all over Iceland.

Míla offers access to the company's premises as well as facilities for antennas on the outside of buildings and in Míla's masts. Access to the premises and masts is subject to their availability.

Colocation is a service Míla offers to telecommunications companies. There are two possible modes of colocation, services enabling telecommunications companies to set up equipment on Míla's premises, and circumstances where a telecommunications company sets up its equipment on premises near a telephone exchange.

Network Operational Centre

Network Operational Centre

Our NOC centre monitors Míla's telecommunications systems throughout the country, along with the connections tying Iceland with Europe and North America. The NOC centre operates around the clock, every day, all year round.

Míla has long experience in monitoring telecommunications networks. The main function of Míla's Network Operations Centre (NOC) is to monitor and track the telecommunication and data network of Míla and submarine cables, as well as other customer networks.

Support of Míla's service is managed and coordinated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by trained personnel. Network management facilities are designed to ensure the efficient operations of Míla's network and continuity of the service.
